Lower Taxes & Growth

In 2025 Mississippi voted to abolish its income tax — the first state to do so since oil-rich Alaska in 1980. We made the case for it for years. The focus now turns to controlling public spending.

Mississippi was historically bottom of the class. Today it is among the fastest-improving economies in the country — in part thanks to bold free-market reforms.

The record

  • 2022: we made the research case for the move to a flat tax.
  • 2025: we made the public case for eliminating the income tax — which Mississippi voted to do that year, the first state since Alaska in 1980.

Why it matters

Letting Mississippians keep more of what they earn rewards work, attracts investment and grows the economy. So far, so good — but income-tax elimination will only be realised if we rein in public spending. To hold spending to account, in June 2026 we launched TaxToolMS.com — the first tool of its kind in the country.
